Are Used Breast Pumps a Good Option? Issues to Consider  What new mother wouldn’t like to save money on a breast pump?  That’s why we are often asked: “Do you have used breast pumps available?”  Some mothers have friends or relatives offering to lend them a used pump. Is a used pump a good option?

Conscious Sedation and Breastfeeding  I wrote this article to explain why weaning a baby from the breast or "pumping and dumping" are not necessary for breastfeeding mothers needing conscious sedation for surgical or diagnostic procedures.  Most medications used for sedation are safe for mother and baby and have no effect on milk supply. NEW

Finding the Breast Pump That Is Right for You One of the most common questions lactation consultants, breastfeeding educators and childbirth educators get is, "What breast pump would you recommend?"  Having worked full and part time and nursed four children, as well as helped many women find a pump that works for them, I've listed the most helpful and comfortable pumps here and categorized them.

Induced Lactation and Relactation  Are you about to adopt a baby and you want to breastfeed him? Are you a birth mother who wants to rebuild her milk supply? Wonderful! It is not only possible, it is fairly easy and the chances are you will produce a significant amount of milk.  NEW

Cabbage Leaves for Treatment & Prevention of Breast Engorgement Many perinatal nurses, lactation specialists and midwives recommend cabbage leaves applied to the breast to relieve pain of engorgement. A review of literature indicates this is a long standing treatment. Although relatively little formal research has been reported, the evidence base is convincing.  I use cabbage leaves for moms with engorgement in my private practice and it really does work!
